Saliba Douaihy, Lebanese (1915 - 1994)

Saliba Douaihy was born on September 14, 1915, in Ehden, Lebanon.
He died on January 21, 1994, in New York City, New York.

In 1929, Saliba Douaihy traveled to Beirut where he studied under master painter Habib Srour (1860 – 1938)
After completing his training in art techniques, Douaihy served as Srour’s assistant painting murals in churches.

In 1932, Saliba Douaihy was accepted as a student at the prestigious Beaux-Arts in Paris, France.
In 1934, he won the school’s top award and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français.
He graduated from Beaux-Art in 1936.
In 1947 he became a professor of art at the Collège de la Sagesse in Beirut, Lebanon.
In 1950, Saliba Douaihy immigrated to the United States settling in New York City. He maintained an art studio at Our Lady
of Lebanon Church in Brooklyn Heights.
In 1956, Saliba Douaihy was awarded the medal of High Honor from the president of the Lebanese Republic for art activities in the United States and Mexico.
Saliba Douaihy returned to Lebanon in 1954, to complete a commission of religious paintings for Saint John the Baptist Church in Zgharta. He returned to his homeland once again in 1972, to create stained-glass panels at the Saint Charbel Church in Aannaya, Byblos.
In 1983, Saliba Douaihy moved to Europe, first settling in London, England, and later in Paris, France.
Sailba Douaihy won several awards for his art including but not necessarily limited to the Lebanese National Order of the Cedar in 1956; the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts Award in 1968; and the Medaglia d’Oro of the Accademia d’Itlia dello Arte e del Lavoro in 1980. His work is included in major art collections including the David Rockefeller Collection.
