William Alexander Coulter, Irish born American (1849 - 1936)

William Alexander Coulter was born in 1849, in Glenariff, Ireland.
He died on March 13, 1936 at his home in Sausalito, California.
From 1862 to 1869, he worked aboard ships. During his time at sea, he made many detailed drawings of ships and the seascape. In 1869, he worked as a sail maker in San Francisco while continuing to create marine art.

In 1943, a Liberty ship, launched from Richmond, California, was named the S. S. William A. Coulter in honor of the artist. William Alexander Coulter is listed in Edan Hughes’ artist reference book titled Artists in California: 1786 – 1940.
He is also listed in Who Was Who in American Art.
