Stepan Fedorovitch Kolesnikoff, Russian (1879 - 1955)

Stepan Fedorovitch Kolesnikoff was born in southern Russia in 1879. In 1897, he studied art in Odessa, and in 1903, he was accepted into the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1919, the Kolesnikoff family immigrated to Yugoslavia settling in Belgrade. From 1920 until 1925, he taught drawing at the Russian–Serbian Gymnasium. From 1921 until 1926, he worked as a scene-designer for the People’s Theatre. His artistic talent won him entrée into high society. He was commissioned to direct the restoration of many government paintings and frescoes. His interest in painting rural landscapes and working class people compelled him to travel throughout Russia and to many foreign places including Belgium, Capri, China, France, Germany, and Turkestan. After suffering from Parkinson’s disease for several years, he died in Belgrade in 1955.
