Pieter van der Hulst was born on February 26, 1651, in Dordrecht, South Holland, the Netherlands. He died on February 14, 1727 in Dordrecht, South Holland, the Netherlands.
Pieter van der Hulst was an accomplished painter and etcher whose body of work includes finely detailed landscapes, harbor scenes, seascapes with ships, portraits, and still life compositions.
In 1674, Pieter van der Hulst, already an accomplished painter, traveled to Italy where he joined a group of Dutch painters living and working in Rome. They called themselves the Bentvueghels, meaning birds of a feather. Pieter’s fellow artists gave him the nickname Zonnebloem, meaning sunflower, because of his preference to painting natural flora rather than the formal bouquets often painted at the time.
In 1681, Pieter van der Hulst left Italy for the Netherlands where he lived in The Hague until 1684 when he returned to his home town of Dordrecht.
In 1691, King Christian V of Denmark received Pieter van der Hulst as an artist of the court of Denmark. The artist lived at court until the death of King Christian V in 1699. He then returned to the Netherlands and permanently settled in his home town of Dordrecht.
The art of Pieter van der Hulst is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum in London, England.
