When Peter Max was just one-year-old his parents fled from Berlin, Germany. It was 1938 and the Nazi movement was underway. The Max family moved to Shanghai, China and lived there until 1948 when they immigrated to Israel. In the years to come, they lived in Europe, settling in Paris for a time, where the young Peter Max began a life-long appreciation for art. In 1953, the Max family settled in Brooklyn, New York.
