Édouard Detaille was born Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille in France in 1848.
He
studied under famed master painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, French (1815 – 1891)
In 1870, Édouard Detaille enlisted in the French Army. He later painted portraits of soldiers, images of war, and scenes of military life.
In 1885, Boussod et Valadon published L’Armee Francaise, a three volume set of folios presenting images of over three- hundred military paintings and drawings by Édouard Detaille.
