Roger Armstrong, American (1917 - 2007)

Roger Armstrong studied at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, CA, and at Chouinard Art Institute, Los Angeles, CA. He began his artist career in Los Angeles in 1932 as a talented cartoonist in the early hey-days of animation. Working for all the major studios -- Disney, Warners, Hanna Barbera, and Walter Lantz -- he played a major role in creating such cartoon characters as Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Scooby-Doo, Little Lulu, and the Seven Dwarfs.

After moving to Laguna Beach in 1952, he taught at Orange Coast College, Irvine Fine Arts Center, and Laguna Beach School of Art which later became Laguna College of Art & Design (LCAD) where an ongoing Scholarship Fund has been established in Roger Armstrong's name. In 1961, he joined the Board of Trustees at the Laguna Art Museum and was soon drafted to be the Museum's Director from 1963-'67.  In 2004-'05, the Laguna Art Museum presented a major retrospective exhibition of Armstrong's illustrative career as a painter -- a trove of watercolor, acrylic and oils which filled the entire museum. Additionally, Armstrong nurtured the long-heralded National Watercolor Society (NWS) throughout his career, serving as its president for a number of years.
