Claire Trevor, American (1910 - 2000)

Claire Trevor was born Claire Wemlinger in 1910, in Brooklyn, NY. She studied art at Columbia University in New York City, NY, and studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, CA. Better known for her acting career, Claire Trevor was an accomplished painter, specifically portrait painting. In 1957, she and her husband, film producer Milton Bren, moved from Beverly Hills to Newport Beach where Claire Trevor spent a greater amount of time painting. In 1981, she moved from Newport Beach to New York City, she continued painting and was also active with charity work including lending her name to support The Orange County Arthritis Foundation. In 1987, she retired from acting and continued to paint. She died in Newport Beach in 2000.

In 2011, the School of the Arts at the University of California, Irvine was dedicated to Claire Trevor and is now officially The Claire Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California, Irvine. Among Claire Trevor’s collectors was her close friend, actor Rock Hudson. Hudson collected her art and also purchased the Bren’s sailboat which was docked in Newport Beach. In the early years in Beverly Hills, Claire Trevor was a regular at Rock Hudson’s bridge games. After Rock Hudson’s death in 1985, an auction of his estate was held at Doyle’s in New York City. Included in Hudson’s estate was one of Claire Trevor’s paintings.
